The main results of the present dissertation are a criteria matrix and a typology for the analysis and categorisation of procedures for the recognition of competences. The starting point for the investigation is a precise definition and systematisation of terminology and theoretical concepts of relevance within this context which also assists in creating a theoretical foundation for the topic. This serves as the basis for a criteria oriented analysis and typologisation of selected national and European recognition procedures. The combination of literature and documentary analysis and expert interviews provides a broad degree of methodological support for the results. These permit an evaluation and classification of the procedures forming the object of analysis, which in turn facilitate alignment and the selection of specific processes for potential users. The dissertation concludes by developing initial recommendations for the situation in Germany.
