Companies are increasingly using algorithms to automate work processes. This dissertation examines the management perspective on the widespread, progressive introduction of artificial intelligence.
Businesses increasingly use algorithms to develop new products, deliver better services, and automate work. In particular, they implement algorithmic management systems that automate managerial work, such as monitoring worker productivity, creating schedules, assigning tasks, and providing feedback. While these systems help reduce costs and improve services, they transform the work environment by reshaping managers’ roles. To create value with algorithms and address implementation challenges, businesses require different management approaches, as without a deeper understanding, they risk suboptimal integration. Understanding the implications of algorithmic management systems for managerial work is therefore crucial.
The topic of algorithmic management is highly relevant to the widespread, progressive adoption of artificial intelligence in business and work contexts. This dissertation explores the managerial perspective in response to the lack of research on the topic. It applies a broad range of methods, including qualitative interviews, quantitative surveys, and analysis of digital trace data, to provide first insights into managerial perceptions and responses. Overall, the results of this dissertation offer a comprehensive overview of the interplay between technological and business factors, a blueprint of the tensions that algorithmic management systems create, and managers’ strategies for addressing them.
