Beschreibung

This book examines Africa-China interactions, which over the last two decades have deepened across a range of areas notably politics, economics, trade, diplomacy, culture, construction, security, and ICT. The setting up of the Forum on China-Africa Co-operation (FOCAC) in 2000 has provided the main institutional and organizational ballast for Africa-China interactions. This book seeks to critically (re)examine, extend and add to the literature by taking a fresh look at Africa-China entanglements in the light of emergent and new realities in the international political economy such as the impact of COVID 19 on national economies and indeed the global economy , rising debt defaults in Africa and elsewhere, the Russo-Ukrainian War, the Artificial Intelligence (AI) race, the re-emergence of big power rivalry, and the Belt and Road Initiative. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in particular must be seen as an added layer of the mode and concerns of Africa-China relations which is specifically the matter of infrastructure. The BRI seems to have triggered as well an emergent strident courting of Africa by its hitherto uninterested traditional and older partners, the EU and the US, in an attempt to respond to and counteract China’s growing presence and influence on the continent. This book should be of interest to scholars of international relations, Africa-Asia studies, researchers, policymakers, activists and indeed the curious non-specialist reader.

Lloyd G. Adu Amoah is the Founding and Inaugural Director of the Centre for Asian Studies (CAS) as well as an Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, at the University of Ghana.  A product of the University of Ghana and Wuhan University (where he earned his doctorate), he has travelled extensively throughout Asia visiting, researching, teaching, presenting papers and giving talks in some of the leading countries on the continent such as China, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, and Macau. “The scholarly literature on Africa-China relations continues to expand with remarkable works on the changing trends of Africa’s engagement with China. Lloyd Adu Amoah’s new book not only extends earlier works on Africa-China relations on topics such as diplomatic engagement, trade, economic, and technology issues, but the new volume offers new insights and novel ideas into our understanding of China’s rise, geopolitical influence, and increasing footprints in Africa. The systematic integration of theoretical ideas with relevant supporting examples elevates the volume to a different new level. The book is also comprehensive with persuasive arguments which add great value to the growing field of Africa-China relations. I highly recommend this book to everyone.” (Dr. Felix Kumah-Abiwu, Associate Professor and Director, Center for African Studies, Kent State University, Ohio-USA)

“China-Africa relations is an under-examined yet crucial issue. It is under-examined because China’s comprehensive and energetic interventions in Africa have in recent times expanded greatly and analysis and understanding have lagged behind.  It is a crucial issue because of the scale, capacity and effects of China’s multiple engagements with many African countries. Lloyd Amoah is to be congratulated on assembling a fine group of contributors with knowledge and understanding of current China-Africa relations, while the editor himself provides enlightening and thought-provoking contributions to the volume. The result is a must-read book for anyone with an interest in one of the most important recent developments affecting Africa: China’s comprehensive regional involvement.” (Professor Emeritus Jeffrey Haynes, London Metropolitan University, UK)

“This edited volume is an important book that comes to us at the right time. Avoiding the polemics currently fashionable in political discussions around Africa-China relations on all sides, it offers a collection of scholarly and well-rounded assessments that in their entirety present a fascinating variety of cases and different angles of a continuingly complex story. This book will be much welcomed by specialists, students of the subject and general readers alike.” (Prof. Dr. Ralph Weber, Professor for European Global Studies, Institute for European Global Studies, University of Basel)

Africa–China Relations: Partnership, Peonage or Pawnage? is a captivating, groundbreaking and unapologetically African-centered interrogation of one of the most consequential geopolitical relationships of the 21st century. Through the pertinent questions it raises, the book succeeds in cutting through ideological noise, and challenges us to think again. A well written book, it masterfully foregrounds African agency while confronting uncomfortable truths about dependency and strategic vulnerability by weaving history, political economy, and diplomacy into a cohesive narrative. Africa–China Relations: Partnership, Peonage or Pawnage? Is undoubtedly an important contribution to the burgeoning literature on sovereignty, development studies, Africa-China relations, African studies and international political economy and South–South cooperation in a changing global order.” (Dr. C. Amo-Agyemang, Department of Political Science, University of Ghana, Accra, Ghana, Distinguished Visiting Professor of Africa’s International Relations, Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University, China)

“This volume brings together distinguished and emerging thinkers who critically examine Africa’s relationship with China. It offers a timely and incisive account of Africa–China relations at a moment when African scholarship is redefining its place in global knowledge production while reassessing the continent’s own strengths and vulnerabilities. The contributors approach the grand promises of China and other external powers with measured skepticism, moving within and beyond conventional paradigms of (neo)colonialism/imperialism and debt-trap diplomacy. They persuasively as well reposition the debate within the shifting dynamics of infrastructure and global interdependence that will shape the decades ahead.” (Tom Hoogervost, Senior Researcher, Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV), and Adjunct Professor at the Universitas Negeri Malang)

“Lloyd Amoah has put together an excellent volume on China-Africa relations, along with contributions from several eminent scholars. They offer meticulously researched essays that explore African agency and South–South cooperation,  both in theory and in practice, while engaging with topical debates in the field of China-Africa studies. This compendium will serve as a seminal text for students and scholars of Politics, International Relations, African Studies, and East Asian Studies.” (Dr. Renu Modi Retired, Professor and  Former Director, Centre for African Studies, University of Mumbai, Mumbai)
