This book offers a collective ethnography of love, intimacy, and care beyond the couple in pre-pandemic urban Italy—exploring queer and straight families of friends, flatmates, lovers, ex-lovers, and others in non-normative relationships. Drawing on a radical queer materialist approach, Other Intimacies examines the relationship between productive and reproductive labour in contemporary capitalism, value extraction and the queer Italian theory of gender (as) work and gender strike. It also contributes to anthropological debates on emotions, representation, and embodiment.   Grounded in long-term grassroots collective research within Italian queer movements—involving self-inquiry with about 100 people and in-depth interviews—the book was originally published in Italian in 2022 and now updated to reflect recent policy changes. It will appeal to scholars in Queer and Feminist Studies, Queer Materialism, Anthropology of the Body, Family Studies, neo-Marxist and post-work theories, as well as practitioners, activists and anyone striving to live beyond compulsory coupledom.   Leo Acquistapace, with a PhD in Social and Cultural Anthropology, authored several papers and book chapters as well as the Italian monograph Tenetevi in matrimonio e dateci la dote: il lavoro riproduttivo nelle relazioni di intimità, solidarietà e cura oltre la coppia nell’Italia urbana contemporanea (2022) on which this book is based. A transfeminist and queer activist, s/he is a member of the Bologna-based collective Laboratorio Smaschieramenti, which has played a key role in several Italian feminist, queer, and workerist debates.   Chiara Bertone is Professor of Sociology at the University of Eastern Piedmont, Italy. Her main interests lie in gender, family studies and sexuality. She is editor of the Palgrave Macmillan Studies in Family and Intimate Life book series. Her publications include Il familiare è politico (2024) and The SAGE Handbook of Global Sexualities (2020, co-editor).   Renato Busarello is an independent researcher, queer and transfeminist activist and political organizer. He authored several papers and held lectures at venues including the University of Bologna, Italy, and Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, Spain. As a member of the Bologna-based collective Laboratorio Smaschieramenti, he has contributed to some of the most significant queer mobilizations in Italy for the last 25 years.
