This book aims to provide a detailed insight into clean and sustainable fuels in merchant shipping for achieving the decarbonization goals set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). In this book, clean-burning fuels such as biodiesel, methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen are highlighted for their significant fuel properties, production costs, bunker readiness, and their advantages and limitations as replacements for existing marine diesel oil and heavy fuel oil. As the shipping industry contributes around 2.8% to global greenhouse gas emissions, this book addresses possible remedies to mitigate the challenges facing the maritime sector, particularly those related to marine internal combustion engines and toxic exhaust emissions.
