This book proposes to integrate two related, yet separate, bodies of knowledge: spatial planning and future studies. The authors show how planners can incorporate innovative approaches and methodologies from future studies, such as strategic foresight and scenario building, to navigate pathways forsustainable cities and regions. This includes envisioning both preferred and undesirable future economic, ecological and social interdependencies across scales to strategically address cross-temporal, space-based challenges and opportunities. Case studies emphasize the importance of designing flexible approaches and show how these insights can be translated in practice into policy, actionable projects, and adaptive mechanisms.
Tijana Dabovic is a spatial planner and Professor in the Faculty of Geography at the University of Belgrade, Serbia, and a core group member of the Global to Local to Global Geodesign for Climate Mitigation project.
Dimitri Toubanos is an architect and urban planner, Professor at École Nationale d’Architecture Paris Val de Seine, France, co-director of the EVCAU (Digital Environments, Architectural and Urban Cultures) laboratory, and co-director of the ENSAéco (Pedagogy and research on ecology in architecture schools) research network.
Abdallah Jreij is an architect and urban planner, Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies (DAStU) at Politecnico di Milano, Italy, and Adjunct Professor at ADA School of Design and Architecture, Baku, Azerbaijan.
