Since 2010, the Inter-University Chair in Law and the Human Genome has been involved in a EU 7th Framework Programme funded project called SYBHEL, leading work package 5. Its aim is to face the issues related to Synthetic Biology and Intellectual Property Rights. During the period since its initiation, two international workshops devoted to this topic have been organized, collecting a number of directly-related, high-level unpublished papers redacted by some of the most prominent experts in this field. Thus, we considered that it would be extremely important and interesting to have all the work gathered in a unique volume, which would be the first book exclusively dedicated to the analysis of the implications of Synbio may and the currently existing intellectual property rights system.

In these years, the Chair organized two international workshops devoted to this topic, collecting a number of high level unpublished papers redacted by some of the most prominent experts in this field worldwide, including Stephen Maurer, Joachim Henkel, Ingrid Schneider, etc. We consider that it would be extremely interesting to have them all gathered in a unique contributed volume, which would be the first book exclusively dedicated to analyze the implications that Synbio may involve in what refers to the currently existing intellectual property rights system.
Synthetic Biology is the most promising, currently existing area of biotechnology specially in human health. However, juridical issues may ruin the development of this market if they are not correctly solved There are no books specifically related to juridical issues (especially IP rights) related to this topic The list of authors comprise some of the most prominent specialist in this field, including the Director of the Biotechnology Area of the European Patents Office
