The DesignBuild teaching method represents a synergetic fusion of design theory and practical construction. It encompasses the evolution of an idea from development through to implementation at a 1:1 scale. As part of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s practice-focused architecture teaching, a 42-metre wooden colonnade offering a spectrum of uses was created as a new village focal point for the community of Rippershausen in South Thuringia. The built result is an impressive demonstration of the cooperation between students, lecturers, and various actors from within the municipality. This handbook describes the DesignBuild method and illustrates the process from the very first design through to prefabrication and the final realization of the project.
