A friendly smiling man stops a cyclist to ask him something, but only a few moments later, this cyclist finds himself in a car belonging to the secret police, which takes him to a secret prison and makes him disappear for nine years in various re-education camps, without trial and without judgment.
The living conditions there are unimaginable. Only through iron discipline and training for body and mind does he manage to survive. Many of his fellow sufferers are not so lucky.
Vu Thu Hien has experienced that after the victory of Ho Chi Minh, his successors in the Vietnamese regime have adopted the methods of their great neighbor China and mercilessly persecute all dissidents as enemies of the state.
"This book is a belated floral wreath, an additional incense stick on the grave of all the unfortunate victims of a dark period, those unfortunates who will not live to see the restoration of justice."
(The author)
As an outstanding expert on the subject, the author not only impressively describes the human fates under the arbitrariness of the ruling party in his factual novel, but also provides - in addition to his sobering philosophical comments on Marxism in general - very complex and far-reaching insights into the communist world and the background to the power struggles within the then Communist Party of Vietnam and its decisions, which still have an impact today and which are still relevant in view of more recent incidents - such as a kidnapping in Berlin in 2017.
