This year marks the sixth time that the GOR has visited its founding city of Cologne. In 2019,
we last met in Cologne’s Südstadt district at our cooperation partner at the time, TH Köln.
This year, the Rheinische Fachhochschule is opening its doors to us as a new partner of the
GOR at its Campus Centre in Cologne-Ehrenfeld.
The former working-class and industrial district Ehrenfeld now has a very lively cultural
scene and is becoming increasingly popular as a residential area - a growing number of
theatres, restaurants and trendy pubs bear witness to this. 230 kilometres from the sea
and within sight of the GOR, Ehrenfeld has one of three inland lighthouses in Germany. The
Heliosturm was built at the end of the 19th century for test and demonstration purposes
by the electrical engineering company Helios. The GOR is also sometimes a test and
demonstration facility for online research and its latest varieties, a kind of lighthouse in the
research landscape. Fits!
As in previous years, we have a great conference programme lined up for you including
keynotes, discussions, presentations, awards, posters, workshops and much more. You can
choose between four simultaneous conference tracks: Track A covers “Survey Research:
Advancements in Online and Mobile Web Surveys”. Track B deals with “Data Science: From
Big Data to Smart Data”. Track C features “Politics, Public Opinion and Communication” and
Track D covers “Digital Methods in Applied Research”.
In addition, we have two award competitions: The GOR Thesis Award 2024 for the best thesis
in online research, and the GOR Poster Award 2024 for the best poster of the conference.
The DGOF Best Paper Award 2024 for the best paper in online research will also be awarded
at GOR.
Our keynotes this year take different looks at the development of our profession. On
Thursday, 22 February, Dr. Martin Andree, Founder AMP Digital Ventures will talk about
“Digital monopolies: How Big Tech stole the internet - and how we can reclaim it“, and on
Friday, 23 February, Prof. Annette Jäckle, professor of survey methodology at the University
of Essex will talk about Data collection using mobile apps and how to increase participation.
On the pre-conference day, Wednesday 21 February, five workshops will take place and
on Wednesday evening we will meet for the GOR
24 Get Together with drinks and snacks. Thursday
evening is GOR party time. The GOR Get-Together will
take place at “Franky’s Bar” (Venloer Str. 403, 50825
Köln). The “Mach Bar” (Zülpicher Straße 40, 50674
Köln) opens its doors for the GOR Party on Thursday
at 8pm.
We are particularly grateful for the enthusiastic
support of and collaboration with our partners at
Rheinische Fachhochschule Köln: Prof. Dr. Christian
Bosau and his team. We would also like to thank
our sponsors and media partners. And, of course,
a big THANKS to you, the conference participants,
presenters, and speakers at this event!
