Beschreibung

The convent of Wienhausen, founded by Agnes of Landsberg, a daughter-in-law of Henry the Lion, duke of saxonie, as one of a series of Cistercian Convents, is the best known of the six Lüneburg Convents. The buildings which are still preserved represent some of the material of the cultural heyday of the 14th C: the Nun's Church, the west wing of the inclosure, the All Saints' Chapel, are unique examples of the North German Brick Gothic. After the Reformation was inaugurated by Duke Ernst von Braunschweig-Lüneburg in the 16th C. the Convent gradually changed into an Evangelical-Lutheran Ladies Convent, which it still is today - as an independent corporation under public law.
