In this work, an on-farm research approach uses proximal and remote sensing at the level of arable fields. Georeferenced soil and plant sampling and laboratory analyses complement and validate the digital methods. The following topics were studied with this approach: (1) validation of relative biomass potential maps (multi-year satellite maps), (2) validation of remote and proximal sensing methods, including organic farming systems, (3) investigation of the spatial variability of nitrate leaching, including organic farming systems, (4) analyses of the relations between digitally determined N balances and nitrate leaching, (5) investigation of the relations between digitally determined plant parameters and measured soil properties, especially soil organic carbon and total nitrogen, (6) examine the aftereffects of historical grassland use on SOC stocks and biomass yield potential.
The methodological approach of this work uses digital methods to determine plant parameters in a high spatial resolution. Soil parameters such as SOC were measured via sampling and aboratory analysis. The future digital determination of soil properties would make the method more scalable and applicable to more sites.
