The contamination of wastewater with an increasing amount of wet wipes and fibrous material is one of the biggest challenges for wastewater pumps today. This has a significant impact on the operational reliability of the wastewater system and is therefore of great relevance. The mechanisms between impeller and textile cannot be fully identified by the existing test procedures for wastewater pumps, which makes it difficult to develop design measures with regard to improved clogging behavior.
The objective of this work was to develop a methodology for visualizing the textile-impeller interaction in a wastewater pump by an optical access. The use of an endoscope with a high-speed-camera allowed the observation of the mechanisms between impeller and textile and thus, allowed conclusions to be drawn on suitable design measures to improve the clogging behavior.
The developed method was applied to a clogging-affine impeller. With the information gained by the optical access, the clogging behavior of the impeller was significantly improved iteratively in four configuration steps. For this purpose, modifications of the impeller geometry as well as additional internals in front of the impeller were used. It was shown that visualizing the interaction between textile and impeller, and thus revealing the occurring mechanisms in the pump, makes a decisive contribution to the further development of a wastewater impeller with respect to its clogging tendency.
