Many business areas are involved in the development, dissemination and use of terminology: from design and marketing to technical writing, training, translation, and localization. Both internal corporate communication and communication between companies and customers are supported by consistent and comprehensible terminology. This is why companies have to deal with processes and methods of terminology work and use tools for terminology management. This applies in particular if user Information is created for using products. The reason for this is the internationally valid standard IEC/EN 82079-1, which requires on the one hand the adaptation of terminology to the respective target group (target group adequacy) and, on the other hand, its consistent use in all user information, documents and accompanying papers delivered with the product. In this study, the cost and benefit aspects of terminology work are examined and substantiated by empirically validated data (key figures). The study includes chapters on the theoretical basis of terminology work, user experience and case studies, key figures for a cost-benefit analysis, an overview of 17 systems for terminology management, extraction, and control. In addition, all the most important functions of Software systems for terminology work are described here. The results of an online survey on practical terminology work in companies are also summarized.

Klaus-Dirk Schmitz
Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dirk Schmitz is Full Professor of Terminology Studies at Cologne University of Applied Sciences in Germany. His teaching and research activities focus on terminology theory and terminology management as wells as on software localization and computer tools for translators. Numerous articles and books where he acts as author, co-author and editor show his excellent expertise in these fields. Prof. Schmitz has also taken a leadership role in national and international forums e.g. as president of the International Information Centre for Terminology Infoterm (2001–2009), vice-president of the German Terminology Association, chairman of the German Standards Committee on Computer Applications in Terminology and member of several advisory boards.
