Lifelong learning gains an increasing importance due to rapid technological developments and an extensive digitalization of society and working environments. Well established learning and didactic approaches, such as distance learning and distance education, support learners in arranging their continuing vocational and academic education along employment, family commitments or mobile disabilities requirements. Since 2016 - and in the first time within a revision of the former statistics of distance learning and distance education - the Federal Institute for Vocational Training and Education (BIBB) therefore conducts annual surveys in order to offer an annual database about the developments of providers, learning opportunities and participants in this didactic field.
