Continuous vocational training gains more and more importance throughout working life. Companies must be able to identify qualification needs and should ensure that their employees receive appropriate training measures. Skill management systems are one option for companies to address this issue. Aligned with strategic business goals and supported by appropriate software solutions, employees’ skills are firstly recorded and documented. In a second step, appropriate HR measures can be derived and taken. A brief literature review as well as interviews with five leading companies in the industrial and service sector in Germany highlight the challenges, but also the great opportunities skill management systems offer.
