In Recife, in the Northeast of Brazil, the city as synthesis of the arts takes form through a municipal law introduced in the 1960’s making mandatory the placement of three-dimensional artworks at the entrance of large buildings. Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca make an inventory of these sculptures present in the daily life of the capital of Pernambuco. But Edifício Recife is not a compendium of images, technical data and specialized critical descriptions. From conversations with doorkeepers, artists gather sincere testimonials, true descriptions of these objects and their relationships with the buildings, the city and the understanding of what is beautiful or ugly. Recife Edifice was presented for the first time in 2013 in the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo within the context of the 33rd Panorama of Brazilian Art, P33: Unique Forms of Continuity in Space, curated by Lisette Lagnado. In 2017, Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca participated in the 5th edition of Skulptur Projekte in Münster, Germany, under the artistic direction of Kasper König and curated by Britta Peters and Marianne Wagner. On this occasion, this publication was edited by Luiz Vieira and Pedro Vieira from the original graphic design by Nina Paim and including new texts by Britta Peters and Lisette Lagnado.
