This book is the second volume in a series exploring the transformative potential of single-family houses. Drawing on design-based research carried out in Italy, it examines how single-family houses can serve as catalysts for change in a country shaped by extensive urbanization and looks at the active role of families and businesses in shaping living and working spaces. The book presents three pilot projects, each addressing pressing environmental challenges and socio-economic trends, laying the groundwork for future policymaking and intervention projects. Moving beyond simple reuse models and segmented strategies, this volume advocates a more integrated approach. It suggests that the architectural values of existing structures, combined with the potential for collective benefits, can drive meaningful change when individual building transformations are situated within broader urban and territorial contexts. Martino Tattara is an architect and Professor of Design and Housing at TU Darmstadt. Federico Zanfi is an architect and Associate Professor in Urban Planning and Design at Politecnico di Milano.
