Editorial The biannual CHS2 conference series has, after seven successful conferences since 2008, grown into the leading platform for scientific exchange in hot forming technologies. The first conference was held in 2008 in Kassel (Germany) and up to the 7th edition in 2019 in Luleå (Sweden) new topics and interests steadily increased and settled down in every conference edition. In the 7th edition the industrial community brought their recent developments in new materials, new sheet coatings, joining technologies and process monitoring. In addition, more fundamental works dealing with process modelling, fatigue and fracture and physical metallurgy were presented to strengthen the basis for future industrial developments. With the 8th edition, the conference is held for the first time in Barcelona. This time with the highest number of contributions of the conference series. It means that hot sheet metal forming is growing into an even more relevant and interesting topic for industry and academia worldwide. It also shows the need of the hot stamping community to meet again after the long conferences break of the past two years. The contributions address the coming challenges related to new steels and aluminium alloys for hot stamping, recent process developments, innovative tribology solutions, advanced characterization techniques and improved modelling approaches. The lightweight demands that have triggered the development of press hardening are still valid and keep asking for advanced materials and processes to give answer to the new demands of the e-mobility. On the other hand, the need for a resilient and green industry is pushing the development of sustainable, versatile, reliable and more efficient forming processes. Press hardening meets all these requirements and can still play a dominant role in sheet metal forming in the coming years. Sustainability: New trends in eco-design stimulate the application of materials with high mechanical and environmental performance. The advent of fossil-free materials opens new research interests and industrial opportunities to progress in the sustainability of the press hardening process. Process versatility: many materials for lightweighting can be manufactured, as steels, stain- less steels, light alloys and also multi-material solutions. Process reliability and efficiency: With the rise of the I4.0 concept and its associated tech- nologies, new research directions focusing on manufacturing optimization towards the zero-defect paradigm have gained attention. Press hardening can benefit from I4.0 data analytics through customized solutions, which offers many possibilities to improve process efficiency and stability Press hardening and related thermo-mechanical processes represent technologies with outstanding potential to meet the emerging industrial challenges. The 8th CHS2 edition keeps pushing the research and innovation in press hardening to expand it to new markets, new applications and new materials aimed to build a sustainable and resilient industrial sector.
