Beschreibung

For many years Christopher Fox was described in concert programmes as “a composer who sometimes writes about music”. Speaking Clearly gathers some of those “sometimes” and reveals how inseparable writing, listening and composing have become in his work.

Since the 1980s Fox has experienced new music not only as a composer but also as a critic, advocate and observer. He writes about Christian Wolff and John Cage, Stockhausen and Feldman, Walter Zimmermann and Mauricio Kagel; about Darmstadt and the post-war avant-garde, notation and performance, electronic music, opera, orchestras and string quartets. Again and again these subjects lead to a larger question: what relationships exist between music and the world in which it is made?

For Fox, music never exists in a vacuum. It needs performers and listeners, spaces and institutions, money and time. It is shaped by politics, technology and social values – and today it must also confront questions of gender, resources and sustainability.

For Speaking Clearly, Fox has returned to his earlier writings, revised them and added new commentaries. The writer of the present encounters his earlier self with agreement, surprise, disagreement and occasional correction. Four decades of writing become a history of new music that makes no claim to be definitive.

Speaking Clearly is therefore also a book about the value of criticism itself – about listening closely, asking questions and accepting the risk that we may have to change our minds.

In Speaking Clearly, composer Christopher Fox looks back on four decades of writing about new and experimental music. His writings range from Darmstadt, Cage, Wolff, Stockhausen, Feldman and Kagel to questions of performance, institutions, cultural politics and sustainability. Newly written commentaries place the earlier texts in dialogue with the present, creating a book that is at once musical history, self-reflection and an argument for a critical musical culture.

Christopher Fox knows new music from the inside: as a composer, performer, writer and critical observer. In Speaking Clearly. Writing About Music, 1985–2026, he brings together writings from four decades, creating at the same time a personal history of contemporary music.

The book moves from Cage, Wolff, Stockhausen and Feldman to Darmstadt and the post-war avant-garde, and onward to opera, electronic music, cultural politics, gender and sustainability. Fox combines informed musical analysis with personal encounters, historical context and sharply drawn judgements, offering readers direct access to the ideas, conflicts and personalities that have shaped new music since the 1980s.

A particular attraction of the volume lies in the new commentaries Fox places alongside his earlier writings. Looking back at previous positions, he corrects himself, argues with his younger self and shows how musical debates have changed over four decades.

A strong title for readers interested in contemporary music, composition, the avant-garde and modern music history – and an especially attractive book for anyone reading about Cage, Stockhausen, Feldman, Wolff and the international new-music scene.
