Beschreibung

Music does not begin where rules end. It begins where the ear decides.

In Beyond Musical Borders, Amadeo Bonaiuto brings together three perspectives on an open musical practice. Twenty-six original compositions become starting points for new interpretations. Crossover asks what happens when different cultural experiences and musical languages meet. Ear Training for Inside–Outside Playing moves from familiar harmonic foundations towards tension, chromaticism, and free improvisation.

Rather than providing finished answers, Bonaiuto invites musicians to transform musical material, listen more closely, and trust their own decisions.

A book about composition, improvisation, and ear training – and about the freedom to move between musical worlds.

Three interconnected musical practices in one volume: 26 open-form compositions, a guide to migration and musical exchange, and an extensive ear-training approach to inside–outside improvisation.

Beyond Musical Borders is intended for musicians who want to move beyond foundational knowledge of harmony, scales, cadences, and chord progressions and develop their own listening and improvisational language.

The Road Song Book provides 26 compositions without fully determining how they should be interpreted. The pieces can be transformed, reorchestrated, reharmonized, or performed in different tempos and styles. Activities also encourage readers to introduce their own compositions and to treat familiar standards as flexible musical material.

Crossover opens another perspective: what happens to music when different experiences, cultural backgrounds, and musical languages meet? The guide connects improvisation and composition with collaboration, research, and a conscious engagement with musical heritage and migration.

In the extensive Ear Training for Inside–Outside Playing, theory becomes a point of departure rather than an end in itself. Pentatonics, hybrid scales, modes, and harmonic displacement are used to make unfamiliar sounds accessible through listening. Numerous exercises move from deliberately created tension back towards free improvisation.

The book is designed for independent practice as well as higher education, lessons, and ensemble work. It encourages musicians to make decisions increasingly through the ear, question established habits, and develop a musical language of their own.
