pinc is coming! Rupprecht Geiger
Rupprecht Geiger (1908–2009) was one of the most important abstract painters of the German post-war avant-garde. Throughout his life, the main theme of his work was color—in particular the luminosity and energy of the color red. Geiger also pursued the idea of color spaces, where color becomes an experience and is supposed to enhance viewers’ awareness of life. He realized some of these rooms, while others remained designs.
Geiger first studied architecture, then turned to painting as an autodidact. In 1940, he was drafted as a “war painter” and painted Russian landscapes in bright colors. After the war, he was one of the founders of the painter group “ZEN 49,” numbering among the pioneers of abstract painting in Germany. In 1948, anticipating the American “shaped canvasses,” Geiger was one of the first artists to create non-rectangular pictures.
