Beschreibung

*** Why the life we made easier still feels hard to live We take the escalator all day, then pay a gym to climb its stairs. We download meditation apps to recover the stillness our devices helped erode. We swipe for connection in cities packed with people. A six-trillion-dollar wellness industry now sells back the effort, focus, and texture that ordinary life once supplied without branding. Something else is happening too. We are becoming more like our machines, and they are learning to seem more like us. Through three lives spanning three generations, Eliot Mannoia traces where the effort went, what we lost with it, and what he calls Artificial Hardship, the practice of restoring what convenience removed. Friction is not an argument against progress. It is a practical, deeply researched guide for staying human enough to find each other.

Eliot Mannoia
Eliot Mannoia is a digital psychologist, researcher, and consultant whose work explores what happens to us as technology, AI, and convenience reshape how we think, feel, and connect. His writing, teaching, and consulting sit on the bridge between emotional intelligence and artificial intelligence, and contribute to the growing field of human-centric digital transformation. He believes these two forces will define the next decade of human life, and argues they should be understood together rather than apart. He works in a city with a particular inheritance. Vienna gave the world Freud's reading of the unconscious, Frankl's insistence that meaning survives even the worst conditions, and Wittgenstein's attention to the limits of language. It is also home to the Digital Humanism initiative launched at TU Wien, now a global network arguing that technology must serve human dignity rather than the other way around. Eliot's work draws on that lineage, carrying it into the era of artificial intelligence. He is the founder of BrandKarma, a boutique research and consultancy that helps organisations design experiences, processes, and cultures grounded in psychological insight rather than pure efficiency. Clients have included IKEA, Canon, Deloitte, Santander, and the Austrian National Tourism Board. He teaches at Danube University Krems and the University of Applied Sciences St. Pölten, and has been a guest lecturer at the WU Executive Academy and the London School of Economics. Each year he delivers workshops on emotional intelligence and AI to more than a thousand professionals navigating an increasingly artificial world without losing the human thread inside it. Before Vienna, Eliot spent a decade in London, including five years at a global advertising agency where he served as chief digital officer on accounts including Nestlé, Disney, and Coca-Cola. Earlier in his life, after studying psychology and business, he served as a certified paramedic. The experience still informs how he thinks about stress, resilience, and what the body knows before the mind does. He also hosts the Mind / Machine podcast, where he explores the psychology of life in an age of intelligent systems. Friction: Why We're Paying Twice for Modern Life is his first book. It argues that as modern life removes effort, resistance, and small inconveniences, we're paying a second time to reintroduce them, and offers a framework for staying human enough to find each other.
