YAG laser capsulotomy is widely and rightly regarded as the standard treatment for opacification of the posterior lens capsule following cataract surgery. A frequency-doubled Nd-YAG laser is used to open the posterior lens capsule with single shots, clearing the previously clouded optical axis and improving visual acuity. Although YAG laser capsulotomy is described as a simple procedure, numerous complications such as damage to the intraocular lens, subluxation or dislocation of the intraocular lens and an increase in intraocular pressure can occur. This atlas uses impressive photos and case reports to show the damage that can occur to the intraocular lens as a result of improper laser capsulotomy and describes in detail how such damage can be avoided for the benefit of the patient.
