After a long period of vacancy, neglect and dilapidation, the 14th-century Thürwachterhaus in Ingolstadt, a former gatekeeper’s house, has received a new lease of life as a private residence. Embedded in the urban realm, the remarkable ensemble includes the historical residential building, a barn and a small courtyard, which can be accessed through the prominent gateway. The concept of the intervention was to retain as many of the historical structural components and materials as possible. In situations where this was not feasible, clearly visible reinterpretations complement the existing stock. This exciting dialogue of old and new in the refurbished gatekeeper’s home perfectly showcases the potential of historical buildings for continued use and development.
