Beschreibung

Time flies by. Yet we are merely at the beginning of our journey.
It happened in July 1978: We - my parents, my two siblings and I - travelled to Spain with our new car for an extended summer holiday. A terrific adventure for me as a three-year-old boy! One of the many stops during the two-day journey was at a motorway service station. Unobserved by the family, I immediately walked away from the picnic spot. The adventurousness had succeeded. I was ready to conquer the world on my own - and the starting point was the parking lot. That’s probably where I’d still be today if my very worried mother hadn’t found and firmly pressed me against her when she caught up with me. Whenever I stop at a motorway service station today, this childhood experience comes to my mind: the little boy’s carefree desire to discover the world. But now also from the father’s point of view: the parents’ concern about their children’s carelessness in the face of danger. For eleven years my children have been conquering the world. They show me the special easiness that is inherent only in being a child. It is an unconditional life in the here and now: the absolute devotion and joy of the moment, but also being caught up in seemingly hopeless despair. Blessing and curse at the same time, not yet knowing that everything has its time and things change. With the camera in hand I am not only the father of my children, but also their silent observer in the background. I witness their being, their doing in the here and now also as a photographer. I try to capture these unique moments, experiences, curiosities and their progress in an honest way, as they come up in a natural manner. I don’t ask my sons to pose for me. It is all about pictures from real life: at home, while playing, after school, at sports or while shopping. A visual sociology of everyday life. My sons are early birds. Their nights end between six and seven o’clock in the morning. After getting up, they are in full swing and with their vivid imagination they take in the world within seconds. The world ain’t enough! Their childlike thirst for conquest inspired me to the title of this book. I am grateful that I have the opportunity to experience our family life as a father and as a photographer. The book represents the first ten years. Time runs fast. Meanwhile first strange sounds of puberty are creeping in. Nevertheless, we are only at the beginning of our journey. The conquest of the world continues. Oliver Raschka, Stuttgart, 2020
