The Victorian period was a contradictory one in many respects. Eroticism, Bigamy, Drug addiction and more were all widespread but were all tastefully “swept under the carpet”. Perhaps for this reason some of the more revealing stories about the exploits of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes as recorded by his faithful Dr. Watson had to remain locked away in “The Secret Bookcase” rather than being published in the “Casebook”.
But modern tastes are less easily shocked.
At least, we hope so.
