Summary In our culture, the ability to read and write is of particular importance, as it has serious implications four our scial, political and economic life. The use of the written word appears, to most of us, as natural and common as the use of the spoken word. However, the skills if reading and writing are, in contrast to spoken language, evolutionarily quite young and must be built up on established functions by systematic training.
