Epoxy resins (EP) are reactive synthetic resins that have been used industrially for more than 50 years in different areas. In 2008, approximately 2,000,000 t of epoxy resin plus various kinds of curing agents were used throughout the world.
One of the main application areas for epoxy resins is to protect surfaces. In the building and the construction industry, the use of cold-curing coatings, i.e. coatings that cure at ambient temperatures, is of the greatest significance. These applica-tions include coatings for corrosion protection, industrial flooring as well as systems for protecting and repairing concrete. Heat-curing EP resin systems are used in powder coatings to protect metals or in interior coatings in the canning industry. Another major field of application, utilises the excellent electrical insulation proper-ties of epoxy resin for the production of insulators for heavy electrical current areas as well as for potting and encapsulating materials and laminates for electronic parts. Over the past years, the use of EP resins has become increasingly important for fibre reinforced composite materials in the renewable energy sector (wind turbine blades), for the construction of sporting equipment, for automobiles and aero-space applications as well as for adhesives, with outstanding adhesion and bonding strength for virtually all contact surfaces.
