In 2018, the Korean Democratic People’s Republic also referred to as North Korea was subject to the worldwide news broadcasting and print media focusing on its nuclear weapons program as a threat to world peace. When the wall painting of the boy inside a North Korean rocket was photographed in October 2015, nobody suspected that “Rocket Man” would one day in a not so far future become a current world political term. This painting provided initial inspiration to the author and publisher to present North Korea photographically as part of a train journey. Railway enthusiasts will find true joy in reading this book as an astonishing variety of vehicles from different years of construction and countries of origin can be found in North Korea.
The locomotives and carriages were manufactured in North Korea as well as in the USSR, the ČSSR, Germany, Switzerland, the People’s Republic of China and Japan.
Attentive readers from Berlin will immediately notice similarities between the subway system in Berlin and Pyongyang – a modern city that offers many things to discover for friends of urban public transportation.
May this publication offer a different perspective on North Korea, a country that is mostly unknown to the western world, and thereby contribute to dissolving prejudices and advancing the rapprochement of the two Korean states.
