This study is concerned with socio-cultural changes in Egyptian society. These can be analyzed as a competition between »westernizing« and »easternizing« cultural concepts. In particular, it addresses the »new veiling« which is being adopted by an increasing number of young women.
In analysing these phenomena the study adds a new dimension to work addressing the »veiling-issue« by differentiating between class, age and gender dimensions.
