When we observe today’s Christianity, we see that a lot of misunderstanding and confusion surround the subject of adoring, praising and worshipping God. Christians fail in this area. How contemporary are the words of the prophet Isaiah, which Jesus spoke to the Pharisees: “This people honour me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men”. In these two verses we can already identify two general problems: formal worship and false worship. In addition we can mention insufficient worship that A. W. Tozer compares to the “missing jewel in the church”.
To consider this subject we will start by examining the meaning of God’s glory, then the necessity of worship and finally the title question: How to praise God?
Of course, in the original languages of the Bible, as in the translations, there is a wide range of terms, which deal with praise and worship. These small differences play no part in our considerations.
An interesting illustration of the importance of this subject is written in 2. Kings 17:26 (NABRE translation): “The nations … do not know the proper worship of the god of the land, so he has sent lions among them that are killing them” since they do not know the law of the god of the land.”
I hope that we recognize how important it is to know how to worship God!
