Beschreibung

When we talk about urban nature, it is often portrayed as a green add-on: as a remedy for urban shortcomings, as a technical solution in the name of climate adaptation, or as an aesthetic enhancement. Such an understanding narrows our perspective. It reduces nature to a mere function and fails to recognize that cities have long been ecological systems in which soil, water, plants, infrastructure, and political decisions are inextricably intertwined. Urban nature is not a retroactive corrective to the city, but an expression of its material, social, and historical conditions. The new ARCH+ Stadtnatur | Urban Nature therefore shifts the perspective: away from the notion of urban nature as a decorative or compensatory measure, toward understanding it as a political and democratic project. The focus is on questions of soil, ecological justice, and the role of the design disciplines—particularly landscape architecture—in the Anthropocene. Urban nature appears here as a collective resource and a field of conflict where the socio-ecological future of the city is negotiated. This issue was made possible through the support of the Berlin Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection, and the Environment. It is published on the occasion of the 38th German Nature Conservation Day (DNT) in Berlin.
