Denkraum Afrika - African Spatial Thinking

When Africa is discussed from a Western perspective, a continent nearly three times the size of Europe shrinks to the size of a projection screen. Stereotypical narratives of scarcity, “backwardness,” or simplicity obscure the historical depth, epistemic complexity, and diversity of cultural, social, and ecological forms of knowledge that shape the continent. Despite its intellectual richness, Africa is often viewed in the Global North through the lens of practicality: as a place of doing and of supposedly “informal” practices, onto which Western notions of socially engaged building are projected. African Spatial Thinking | Denkraum Afrika therefore undertakes a deliberate shift: away from the dominant discourse on Africa, toward a focus on African and Afro-diasporic thinkers and practitioners who, drawing from their respective historical, political, and material contexts, discuss how space is created, negotiated, and defended.
