"When I began this project back in 1990 I started photographing Ralph and Sensa, a Puerto Rican couple living with AIDS in the Bronx with their four daughters. I had no idea that I would go on this journey and that it would take me as deep and as far it has. It´s a window into their lives, a window through which one can touch, interact and truly understand."
"It´s a documentary about life. It gets under your skin and stays with you and lives with you and becomes a part of your life." - Steve Hart
"An intense experience you must partake of to understand."
Determined to tell the story that mere numbers cannot. Steve Hart has created a tale that is at once universal and personal. Through the unique capabilities of an interactive, multilayered family photo album we see the devastation of AIDS and the many other social problems that threaten this enduring, loving family.
Although there are images of marital abuse, there are also voices filled with deep love. There is death, yet this is a document of life. Throughout the story the luminous faces of the four beautiful young girls portray the pain that surrounds them. Yet the children are the ones who sustain the hope and give meaning to the numbing, staggering statistics about AIDS, its orphans and its cruelties. Through this documentary, the human story and social reality merge seamlessly in an educational project complete with fact and emotion, harshness, caring and determination.
The CD-ROM package includes an illustrated brochure and performance guidelines for Windows and Macintosh. Although the powerful photographic sequences are the core of this narrative, the streamlined, interactive CD-ROM contains video documentation, interviews, statements and a full resource guide about AIDS, and has been made simple enough so that people without computer experience can take full part in the multilayered interactive experience.
