Practicing Music

This booklet was conceived to give practical advice to people, regardless of age, who play music actively and therefore are engaged in practicing. It presents easily understandable remarks, tips, and instructions how to counteract effectively the numerous and typical problems of practicing (such as stage fright, weak concentration, disinclination, fear of examinations, and learning by heart). Thus, the reader can devise a practice method that is ideal for him-one that saves him time and ensures success.

Tom de Vree
Tom de Vree (* 1939) studied violin, composition and orchestral conducting in Rotterdam and Tilburg (Netherlands) and at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. As violin teacher and conductor, he worked for decades at the Rotterdam School of Music as well as lecturer at the Conservatory of Music in Tilburg, where he held lessons about problems such as poor study habits, concentration difficulties, memory blocks, stage fright, performance anxiety, etc. In addition he always worked as composer and chamber musician. Tom de Vree (* 1939) studied violin, composition and orchestral conducting in Rotterdam and Tilburg (Netherlands) and at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. In addition to his educational endeavors, he also worked as conductor, composer and chamber musician. For more than 20 years he led an orchestra founded by him and as composer published a number of chamber music works, songs, stage music and a symphony. As violin teacher and conductor, he worked for 22 years (1959–1981) at the Rotterdam School of Music (“Rotterdamse Muziek en Dansschool”), which at that time was considered the largest in Europe. In 1969 he was appointed head of the department for string instruments. During this time, he published numerous teaching materials, especially for group lessons, which were introduced in Rotterdam in 1963 based on the American model. Associated initial problems were a great challenge for the author to rethink existing instrumental didactics. Later, when group lessons began at other music schools, de Vree held numerous lectures and seminars, some of them teaching demonstrations, with students in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. From 1972 until his retirement, Tom de Vree was employed as lecturer at the Conservatory of Music in Tilburg (“Brabants Conservatorium”), where he spoke in particular about “Didactics of Instrumental and Vocal Music Lessons” as well as discussed, analyzed and “cured” students‘ problems such as poor study habits, concentration difficulties, memory blocks, stage fright, performance anxiety, etc. In doing so, the many years of work at music schools and dealing with students of all ages were a wealth of experience for him.
