Beschreibung

The implications of new airspace entrants and emerging technologies on air traffic management operations need to be meticulously explored. Forthcoming paradigm shifts in energy sources, aircraft design and propulsion systems are also poised to profoundly influence the airport layout and operational processes related to ground handling. Consequently, the aim of this doctoral thesis is to develop an advanced and scalable simulation environment with the ability to evaluate the use of novel aircraft concepts and air traffic management operating procedures in civil aviation. For this purpose, an object-oriented air traffic simulation environment is developed and coupled with a discrete event simulation for the airport. The key objective of the flow-based hybrid simulation environment is to enable the investigation of network-related effects when exposed to a variety of disruptions. In contrast to current flow-based models, the comprehensive simulation platform is designed to provide deeper insights into the underlying interdependencies by modeling higher levels of detail for selected areas, whilst covering the entire global air transportation network. This hybrid simulation environment is furthermore employed in the present dissertation to assess the impact of a short range all-electric aircraft on the European air traffic network from a flow-based perspective. The underlying approach assumes that all certification-related questions regarding airworthiness have been addressed and do not consider any economic factors related to airline operations. Aircraft trajectory calculations rely on the Base of Aircraft Data (BADA) dataset provided by EUROCONTROL. The new design concept is also incorporated into BADA, resulting in a new set of coefficients for the regional all-electric aircraft in low-wing configuration. Along with the adjusted parameters affecting airborne performance, ground-related aspects are also taken into account. This includes assumptions regarding operational procedures, charging capacities and modifications to infrastructure. Investigations are conducted at the single flight trajectory level as well as at the airport and the entire network
