Catalog “Thinking Searching Waiting” was published in May 2018, in the German language along with English translation, on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition of Efimija Topolski that was held in Basel. Exhibition was curated by ds art Binningen and within the project “From Intimate to Public”.
Featured works in catalogue were created over a three-decade-long creative career that largely took place away from the public eye. A Serbian artist Jasna Topolski was 26 years old with a promising art career when she retreated from society and entered the Christian-orthodox Monastery of Gradac in 1992, becoming Mother Efimija. As with the Basel Exhibition where there was an opportunity to see some of her most powerful works for the first time, many of them have been premiered in this publication.
Through her drawings, Efimija Topolski conveys archaic and existential experiences between conception and death. Her artistic world inhabits animals and plants, agents for the expression of existenWal feelings which challenges us to make a connection through them to our own inner worlds. There is the pain of loneliness, the yearning for relaWonships and for shelter and safety, exhilaration feeling of freedom, danger of feeling exposed and lost without these safe place.
The author of the catalog essay, Denise Ellenberger identifies key themes in Efimija's artistic work: Protection and comfort, Love and trust, Captivity, Loneliness, Insecurity; Curiosity, Delight and Joy, Security and trust, Displacement, Longing, Wellbeing and Determination. Examining the artistic connections and similarities she points to Paul Klee and Joseph Beuys.
