Beschreibung

The Hellenic plate boundary region, located in the collision zone between the African and Eurasian lithospheric plates, is presently the seismo-tectonically most active area of Europe. This is reflected in the occurrence of more than 4500 intermediate-size earthquakes during the last 30 years, with several large and destructive events among them. In order to understand the geodynamic processes in such a hazardous area, it is of great importance to know the kinematic field of this region. During the last 15 years, GPS measurements have been successfully used to determine the crustal motion in the area of Greece. An extended reoccupation network covering whole Greece and southern Italy has be measured periodically in numerous GPS campaings since the late eighties, and a continuous GPS network has been operated in the region of the Ionian Sea since 1995.
