The donaufestival 2022 reader Stealing the Stolen evolved from the critical discourse on cultural appropriation. The book published by Verlag für moderne Kunst fathoms the potentials of (re-) appropriation processes of what does not belong or of what was never conceded – in art, in music, in everyday life. Such proposals of counter-appropriations defy hegemonic methods and cultural exploitation tactics. They could cultivate a liberating, resistant practice “from below and elsewhere” that transcends the notions of ownership and theft.
