Over a period of two years, artist Matthias Mollner portrayed people who are suffering from the severe multisystem disease ME/CFS and other complex chronic illnesses. Mollner developed the idea for this book together with his seriously ill life partner, who passed away in 2024. It is focusing the attention on those who, due to their fate, all too often disappear from society and are no longer noticed. Through realistic and intimate photos and interviews, “Fighters in the Crash Zone” provides an insight into the challenging and often extreme life realities of 18 sufferers and their caregiving relatives. The book reveals a world that is often invisible and misunderstood by outsiders, a world in which every day survival is unsure as these humans are fighting for health, support, recognition and dignity with the little energy they have available. The publication is focusing in particular on how those affected are coping with their illness. The survival strategies of these individuals are made visible, as are their dreams, desires and strengths. In addition to the portraits of those affected, nine authors analyse in their texts the problematic way in which the medical and social systems, society and politics are dealing with ME/CFS and multisystemic chronic illnesses.
