Beschreibung

This book presents the teaching of the Alexander Technique as an art and craft. With experience the craft aspect of teaching – technical skill, dexterity, and adaptability developed through training and practice – gives rise to the art of teaching through observation, intuition, perceptive insight, and more individualised responses to pupils. Some of the complexities and issues teachers often face are highlighted. Among them: how the teacher sees and assesses the pupil in lessons; vocabulary choices; the use of feedback; appraising and attuning stimulus levels; preventing teacher-induced habits; developing open-ended observation skills; addressing the pupil’s concepts of perception and action; transitioning from lessons to a self-help approach; and teaching the Technique as a continuous practice. Although issues are raised and discussed, it is argued that there cannot be any definitive answers; the art and craft of teaching requires continuous reflection, sensitivity, and flexibility beyond any system and beyond technical skills alone. The aim is to identify preconceptions and habitual attitudes which may impede seeing the individual pupil as a whole and adapting one’s teaching accordingly. Developing the art and craft of teaching involves enhancing one’s perception which aids understanding, which in turn fosters empathic insight. As the art and craft of a teacher evolves and matures, teaching is simultaneously grounded in skills and experience, and created in the moment-to-moment interactions with the pupil. This book is primarily intended for new teachers giving individual lessons.
