Verlorenes Erbe

The theologian and professor of religious studies F. Claus Schedl CSsR (1914–1986) was not only a renowned scholar and university teacher in Mautern, Vienna and Graz, but also had profound knowledge about the Middle East (or: but also an expert on the Middle East), a region he travelled frequently. The experiences he made became part of both his academic work and his teachings. In addition, he made several thousand photos between 1951 and 1984 during his visits. These slides depict scenarios which are irretrievably lost today, in part due to political unrest, civil war or social trouble, but also due to a misunderstood modernization. This publication processes a part of this heritage and of Schedls unpublished typescript “Erwanderte Bibel” (“Travelling the Bible”). Additional contributions by colleagues and companions add a contemporary academic view on Schedls work which is to be read on the basis of the prevailing circumstances.
