Students are often referred to as ‘digital natives’, and it is assumed that they are proficient in using digital technologies. The fact that learners cannot necessarily transfer their digital skills to their everyday university life became particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic in the summer semester of 2020. The question of providing educational provision tailored to the target group, which prepares students sustainably for the opportunities and challenges of digital transformation, seems more relevant than ever in the wake of COVID-19.
The project coordinated by the Styrian Higher Education Conference to analyse the digital skills of first-year students paints a detailed picture of students’ digital skills. Based on this, recommendations for action regarding the use of technology in higher education teaching are presented.
