Beschreibung

ASMOSIA XIII presents in two volumes the papers and posters from the regularly organised international conference of the »Association for the Study of Marble and Other Stones in Antiquity«, which took place in Vienna in 2022. The 77 papers of the Viennese symposium reflect the current state of research in the field of archaeometry and provenance of ancient marbles and are dedicated to eight major topics: the different types of marble and their use in architecture and sculpture during antiquity; provenance research on marbles and other types of stone; the development of databases and methodology; geology and quarries, including their organisation; specific properties of stone and the effect of climatic influences on stone and its restoration; pigments and the application of colour to marble and finally, the production and trade of stone and marble in Alpine regions and the Danube provinces. There are also contributions on transport networks, the distribution of various goods, the mobility of workshops and the characterisation of ceramic raw materials and aggregates in order to describe production techniques and the regional distribution of products.
