Temporal Goods of the Church

C. 1254 § 2 of 1983 Codex luris Canonici legislates the main objectives which justify the Church to possess temporal goods namely the regulation of divine worship, provision of fitting support for the clergy and other ministers, and the carrying out of works of the sacred apostolate and of charity, especially for the needy. The Church needs among other things, temporal goods (money etc.) to facilitate its mission entrusted to her by Jesus Christ, to go and proclaim the Gospel to the whole world. This work researches closely the reason for the decline of foreign aid, it analyses the reasons leading to this decline, it analyses also the reason why Christ’s faithful in the Catholic Diocese of ­Tanga are unable to support their Church without dependency on foreign aid. It researches the effects this decline has on the regulation of divine worship, provision of fitting support for the clergy and other ministers and the carrying out of works of sacred apostolate and of charity, especially for the needy. This work recommends some solutions for the Christ’s faithful and the administrators for temporal goods of the Church in Tanzania and specifically in the Catholic Diocese of Tanga which when carefully applied will help in solving the long time problem of dependency syndrome which is not only a problem in the Church but also for the State machinery of Tanzania and all African countries. The signs of times show that the Church of Tanzania and that of the Catholic Diocese of Tanga has to shake off the dependency syndrome. Christ’s faithful in Tanzania have to abide to the canonical norms which require them to fulfil their canonical obligation of supporting their Church as legislated in c. 1260 and c. 222 CIC/1983. This work recommends at the end what ways and methods can be applied and initiated in order to achieve the goal of self sufficient Church.
In den letzten Jahren ist die finanzielle Unterstützung durch die Kirchen und Hilfsorganisationen aus Europa für die Sendung der Kirche in Tansania stark zurückgegangen. Die Gründe liegen u. a. in den finanziellen und wirtschaftlichen Krisen in den Geberländern, aber auch in den hohen Kirchenaustrittszahlen und der damit schwindenden Finanzkraft der römisch-katholischen Kirche. Das bedeutet, dass eine finanzielle Unabhängigkeit der Kirche in Tansania von Europa unausweichlich, ja unbedingt erforderlich ist. Dieses Buch untersucht den Vermögensbesitz der Kirche und die Verwendung dieser finanziellen Mittel ausgehend von der Bibel und den Bestimmungen des Kirchlichen Gesetzbuches auf neue Möglichkeiten der Finanzierung der römisch-katholischen Kirche in Tansania und der Diözese Tanga.
