In SPACE FOR, Berlin-born artist Ulrike Brückner looks at the new – social – spaces in the wide expanses of the internet.
She chooses as her starting point the private photographs posted on different platforms and forums. She then cuts the figures out of their original environment and places them in an imaginary, undefined, artificial and empty space. This image space is usually reduced to mat, coloured surfaces and a horizontal line. Various figures make an appearance on this virtual stage, with the focus on the body language. These edited images are divided into different headings, e.g. winners / kids / profiles / pets. The image formulation chosen by the photographer is only slightly enhanced and makes visible the aura of unreality which the process of media-based transformation creates around the characters.
