Heinz J. Angerlehner (Museumsgründer) Josef Florian Krichbaum’s Kid Guards exhibition in the Salon of the Angerlehner Museum was an early standout of the 2025 exhibition programme. The works on display were like a special kind of encounter: his painting melds the Old Master universe of Hieronymus Bosch and the pop imagery of Takashi Murakami with near-seamless ease. Finely wrought brushwork meets comic-like figures, and precision meets fantasy, opening a window into the singular world that Josef Florian Krichbaum creates with his Kid Guards. Before revealing too much, I would like to briefly tell the story of how this exhibition came about. Josef Florian Krichbaum and I have been in close touch since 2001. Right from our very first encounters, I was as impressed by the extraordinary precision of his work as by its ability to subtly draw the viewer into another reality. Several of his works have already found their way into the Angerlehner Collection, which makes it all the more gratifying that the right moment has now come to present his oeuvre in a solo exhibition. Krichbaum himself has close biographical ties to Upper Austria. Born in Innsbruck in 1974, he grew up in the municipality of Ampflwang im Hausruckwald from 1977 onwards. After completing his secondary education, he went on to study at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, initially under Professor Wolfgang Hutter—one of the leading representatives of Fantastic Realism—and later under Professor Wolfgang Herzig, a cofounder of the “Wirklichkeiten” group of the Vienna Secession. Both teachers played a formative role in his development as anartist. Since earning his degree in 2001, Krichbaum has been working exclusively as a freelance artist. His sustained engagement with the Old Masters, together with his distinctive, contemporary style, garnered wide acclaim early on. Today, Josef Florian Krichbaum can look back on more than 120 exhibitions, with the show at the Angerlehner Museum marking a new highlight. Since 2017, his work has gained significant visibility on the international stage, appearing in exhibitions around the globe, including in the United States, the United Kingdom, Dubai, and Singapore. Krichbaum’s collaborations with numerous renowned national and international galleries provide striking testimony to this development. Despite his international reach, the artist remains based in Vienna and the Hausruck hills in Upper Austria; this rootedness is reflected in his art, as is his open, globally informed visual vocabulary. This exhibition invited viewers to immerse themselves in Krichbaum’s richly layered visual language and transported them for a brief moment into the captivating realms inhabited by his Kid Guards.
