Beschreibung

Ulcinj/Ulqin is a coastal town in Montenegro, with a very diverse cultural heritage. It was founded in the 5th century BC, at first inhabited by Illyrians, later taken over by the Romans, became part of the Byzantine Empire After the Byzantine period and before Venice turned Ulcinj/Ulqin into an important port, it was ruled by the local lords. Later the city was conquered by the Ottomans, and from the 19th century onwards, the town was part of Montenegro.   Thus, Ulcinj/Ulqin appears today a city with many natural beauties and a city with many tourist attractions, but with hidden spots that are in need of reconstruction and regeneration, so that its old beauty can once again emerge and make the town liveable and more attractive for tourists. This was the initial situation in April 2017, when the students from the Vienna University of Technology (TUW) and Polytechnic University of Tirana (UPT) arrived. It was soon clear to everybody that much could be achieved with only small and inexpensive interventions that bring to light the rich cultural heritage of the city. After a workshop and a meeting with scholars and some stakeholders from Ulcinj/Ulqin in September 2017 and a presentation of the first ideas in front of the public, it was clear, that it would be a pity if nothing is achieved. Many residents from Ulcinj/Ulqin came to the presentation, and the projects were received with great interest. This was when the idea to create a book with the results of the students' works and with the ideas of the participating scholars was born in order to bring back the hidden beauty of Ulcinj/Ulqin once again.
