Methods of quantitative image analysis, modelling and geographical information systems were combined to analyze arid agricultural systems. The research was carried out in three mountain oases of the Sultanate of Oman and at Qira oasis in the Taklamakan desert of the PR of China. Additionally one study was carried out at the global scale and one regional study covered the northern part of Oman. The thematic focus was set on the mapping of land cover and land use at different scales, the establishment of water- and nutrient balances, the calculation of carrying capacities to describe the sustainability of resources use of mountain oases and on methods to estimate biomass density non-destructively. The dissertation thesis presented here gives summaries of the used materials and methods and of the main results in English and German language. Six publications, that are part of this dissertation were reformatted to appear in a unique layout and are attached as appendices.
